When It's Time to Upgrade Your Trim and Baseboards

Trim doesn't get the attention walls and cabinets do, but it's the single biggest reason a freshly painted room can still look "off." Tired baseboards, undersized casings, or builder-grade trim from the early 2000s pull the eye toward everything that isn't new.

Here's how to tell what your trim actually needs and what the upgrade looks like in dollars.

Repaint, repair, or replace?

Quick decision tree:

Just repaint if the trim is:

  • Properly sized for the room (more on that below)
  • Solid wood or MDF without water damage or split joints
  • Just dirty, scuffed, or yellowed from age

Repair + repaint if you have:

  • A few damaged sections (water under a leaky window, dented corners)
  • Joints that have opened up but the profile is still right
  • One or two missing pieces — usually base shoe or quarter-round

Replace if:

  • Baseboards are 3" or shorter (looks dated in any room with 9'+ ceilings)
  • Casings are skinny "ranch" or "colonial" profiles from the 90s/2000s
  • The MDF is swollen at the bottom from past water exposure
  • You're already painting walls a major new color and the trim profile feels wrong against it

What "right size" trim actually means

Modern trim sizing rule of thumb:

  • 8-foot ceilings: 5"–6" baseboard, 3"–3.5" door/window casing
  • 9-foot ceilings: 6"–7" baseboard, 3.5"–4" casing
  • 10-foot ceilings: 7"–8" baseboard, 4"–5" casing, plus consider adding crown
  • 12-foot ceilings or vaulted: 8"+ baseboard, plus crown molding to ground the room visually

Most homes in New Smyrna Beach, Port Orange, and Ormond Beach built between 1995–2010 have 9-foot ceilings and 5-inch trim — undersized. Bumping to 7" is one of the highest-ROI upgrades you can make for the cost.

What it costs in 2026

For a typical room (12'x14' bedroom, two windows, one door):

  • Baseboard replacement only (7" MDF): $400 – $700 installed and painted
  • Baseboard + door/window casings: $700 – $1,200
  • Add crown molding (4"–5"): $500 – $1,000
  • Full trim package (base + casings + crown + paint): $1,500 – $2,500

For a whole-house refresh of about 10 rooms with new base, casings, and crown, you're typically in the $8,000 – $15,000 range depending on profile choice and complexity (cathedral ceilings, two-story foyers, and curved walls add cost).

The signs people miss

A few things we see all the time on inspections that homeowners haven't noticed:

  • Caulk lines that have split open between trim and wall — looks like dirt at first glance, but it's a hairline crack that's catching dust. Will widen.
  • Nail pops through paint where trim has shifted — usually means the trim wasn't fastened to studs originally.
  • Soft baseboard near exterior doors — water has wicked up from threshold flashing and rotted the back of the MDF. Usually invisible until you press on it.
  • Mitered corners that have opened more than 1/16" — wood movement from humidity. Needs to be re-mitered or filled and painted.

Why trim work pairs with painting

Most homeowners learn this the hard way: if you paint the walls a new color first and then upgrade the trim, you'll need to repaint the walls again to clean up where the new trim meets the wall. Doing both at once saves the second paint job and costs less than the two phases combined.

What new trim adds at resale

Realtors in Volusia County tell us "good trim" is one of the first things buyers notice in walkthroughs, especially in homes priced above $400k. Bumping baseboard from 5" to 7" and adding crown molding in primary rooms typically returns 80–120% at resale within 2 years. It's one of the few cosmetic upgrades that often pays back fully.

Bottom line

If your home was built before 2015 and you've never upgraded the trim, there's a good chance it's undersized for your ceiling height and pulling the rest of your finishes down. The fix is usually less expensive than people think — and dramatically more impactful than another wall color.
